CLT is much more than a regional airport. In 2025, the airport handled 53.6 million passengers, including approximately 4.7 million international travelers. Charlotte Douglas reported connections to 43 international destinations, and American Airlines operates CLT as its second-largest hub.

That gives someone relocating to Columbia a second major air-travel option in addition to CAE.

For example, buyers arriving from New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Europe, Canada, Mexico or the Middle East may find that CLT provides a nonstop option or substantially more schedule choices than smaller regional airports.

Which Airlines Serve Charlotte Douglas International Airport?

As of September 2026, Charlotte Douglas officially lists the following passenger airlines. The airport notes that Sun Country, Vacation Express and Viva Aerobus operate charter and/or seasonal service.

The concentration of carriers means Columbia-area residents using CLT can compare traditional network airlines, low-cost carriers and international airlines instead of relying on a single airline.

American Airlines: The Biggest Player at CLT

For many Columbia-area travelers, American Airlines is the airline most closely associated with Charlotte Douglas. CLT is American's second-largest hub, which translates into an enormous number of daily departures and connecting opportunities.

American's network from Charlotte reaches cities throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe. International service has continued to expand, including destinations such as London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Madrid, Munich, Rome, Paris and Athens. American has also announced the return of nonstop Barcelona service for summer 2027.

For Columbia buyers flying through Charlotte, there is another useful option: American operates service between CLT and Columbia Metropolitan Airport, with current schedule aggregators showing flights roughly every few hours. That gives travelers the choice of renting a car and driving from Charlotte or connecting onward to CAE.

Delta, United, Southwest and the Low-Cost Carriers

American may dominate CLT, but it isn't the only option.

Delta Air Lines provides service to important Delta markets, while United Airlines connects Charlotte with major United hubs. Southwest Airlines adds another major domestic choice, and carriers such as Frontier and Spirit can sometimes produce substantially lower fares for travelers whose dates and baggage needs fit their pricing models. All are listed as current CLT carriers by the airport.

That's particularly useful for a relocation buyer because schedule flexibility can be as important as price. If you are coming to South Carolina for three days of intensive home tours, arriving four hours earlier—or leaving a day later—may be worth more than saving a small amount on the fare.

International Flights Can Make CLT Particularly Attractive

One reason Columbia-area residents may use Charlotte Douglas is its international network.

Charlotte reported 43 international destinations in 2025. One particularly significant addition came in 2026 when Etihad Airways began nonstop Charlotte-Abu Dhabi service, giving the region direct access to the Middle East and connecting opportunities into Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Etihad initially announced four weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The route is more than 14 hours long and represents one of CLT's most significant recent international expansions.

London is another important example. Current flight data shows American operating about 21 nonstop flights per week between London Heathrow and Charlotte, or roughly three per day, with service every day of the week.

That can matter tremendously for international buyers, corporate transferees and Columbia residents who travel abroad frequently.

What Does It Cost to Fly Into Charlotte?

There's no single meaningful "Charlotte airfare." Prices depend upon the origin city, dates, airline, baggage, advance purchase and whether the itinerary is nonstop.

But current fares give buyers a useful idea of the range.

For Miami, current Google Flights data showed Frontier round-trip fares beginning around $128, with one-way fares as low as $44 on selected dates. American was around $208 for one comparable itinerary.

New York-to-Charlotte fares were recently available from approximately $174 round trip on Frontier, while American, Delta and United examples were generally higher. New York is particularly well served: recent schedules showed 118 weekly nonstop American flights, 65 on Delta, 33 on United and seven on Frontier.

From the West Coast, a recent Los Angeles-to-Charlotte search showed American nonstop round trips around $441, while connecting low-cost options could be considerably cheaper.

Internationally, recent London-Heathrow-to-Charlotte nonstop American fares were around $1,065 round trip, although typical prices can vary considerably by season.

These prices are snapshots, not quotes. Airfare can change multiple times in a single day.

Coming Through Charlotte to Look at Homes in Columbia?

A relocation visit works best when the house hunting begins before the flight takes off.

  • Give yourself neighborhood time. Don't schedule every available hour with home showings. Drive around, eat locally, visit shopping areas and experience the places you're considering.
  • Leave room for a second showing. The house you liked online may not be your favorite in person—and the one you nearly skipped may become the front-runner.
  • Check both CLT and CAE when booking. Depending on your origin, fare and itinerary, flying directly to Columbia may make more sense, while CLT may offer more nonstop choices or better pricing.
